Fatherless Fathers Day

Yesterday would have been my Dad’s 76th birthday. Today I celebrate my first Father’s Day without him, and Thursday will be the anniversary of his passing. In a way I’m glad the three are so close together, but it is proving to be a hard week, that’s for sure 😭😭😭

My dad was the best Grandpa and we miss him so much. He was a great example of how to love your neighbors, love the planet, and just love life. He was always down for an adventure and I love that I also inherited his adventurous spirit. From taking our family to Mexico when I was a kid for a month long immersion, to backpacking around Europe with me in my early 20’s, to coming back to Mexico in 2018 to help me and my 3 kids move back to Oregon (and many of his own trips to Costa Rica, Guatemala, México and Hawaii) he often seemed to live his life like he was on vacation. I love that attitude and have tried to make my life feel like a vacation as much as possible 😎 thanks to him.

We don’t know how much time we have here on Earth. Don’t put off the things you want to do in life, find a way to do them now. Get creative! My dad was far from wealthy, but he still found creative, inexpensive ways to travel and could earn money or barter his services on the road.

He was such a talented craftsman, it would be cool to put together an album of all the stuff he’s built over the years.

His cabin in North Idaho is a testament to his creativity and ingenuity. If you ever want to check out his little piece of paradise in North Idaho, you can! He was Airbnbing the cabin for years before he passed and Rhianna and I have been able to continue that endeavor with the help of his caretaker Rich who lives on site.


My Dad left a legacy in so many ways, and I know that his heart and his spirit lives on in his kids and grandkids. We will do our best to take good care of the land you have left to us.

Anniversary of my Dad's diagnosis

Anniversaries help us to remember and acknowledge things in the past. They might not always be happy memories, but I do believe that remembering and reflecting is important. It was a year ago this Memorial Day that I found out my dad had cancer. Three weeks later he was gone.  These pictures were all taken about 2 years ago. We had no idea then that these would be the last memories with Grandpa.  I’ve wanted to write about his passing for some time now, but I just wasn’t ready until now.  His death has been hard for me to process in a lot of ways. I know death is never easy, and cancer can be a horrible way to die, so I don’t fault my dad for his decision. What I do wish in hindsight is that it wasn’t illegal in Idaho to end your own life, in cases of terminal illness. Day Care

Jenica is going to daycare for the first time this afternoon. I think I'm having a much harder time with it than she will. The lady that will be watching her one day a week also watches my friend Brandi's son, so Jenica will get to play with Judah while she's there. There are also a few other kids that come on Thursday afternoons so I'm sure she will have lots of fun. I know I can't have the best of both worlds (stay at home mom and career woman), it's just hard to have to leave my baby girl with someone who doesn't love her like I do. It's times like these when I wish I didn't live so far away from my family, so Jenica could just spend an afternoon with her Grammy or her cousin Kayla instead of having to go to a strangers house. Rob and I have weighed the pro's and con's and feel like a little time with other kids will actually be good for Jenica right now and will allow me to focus on work with out worrying about what Jenica could be gettin
