Oklahoma
We rolled into Oklahoma City Monday evening and decided to stop and see the Memorial for the 1995 bombing of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building. I was living about 5 hours away near Branson, Missouri when it happened and remember seeing it all over the news. 168 people were killed and many more injured. The suspects were aprehended and authorities learned that they were acting in retaliation to the governments actions at Ruby Ridge and Waco in 1992 and 1993. One was sentenced to death and was executed in 2001. The other received life in prison.
A friendly security guard offered to take our picture and told us it was a tradition for kids to dip their hands in the water and leave their handprints on the wall, so that’s what we did.
We spent the night in the Bass Pro parking lot, which was right next to the Bricktown area of downtown OKC.
The Bass Pro shop itself was a fun way to kill an hour or so the next morning while Rob worked.
The kids loved trying out all the trackers and ATV’s - Kenton would like to add this one to his birthday wish list. 👆🏼
There was a huge fish tank with all kinds of fish native to Oklahoma that were really fun to look at.
After buying a bike lock, the girls and I headed out for a bike ride. I had already walked around some of the area before they got up, so I had an idea of where I wanted to take them.
We rode by the Chesapeake Energy Arena, home court to the NBA’s Oklahoma City Thunder, then continued on to the Botanical Gardens.
Sadly, while we were out biking, the air conditioner in the RV went out so we spent the afternoon in a repair shop getting it fixed 😔
But... at least it’s fixed and we have A/C again... (kind of... read to the end to see what I mean.) The shop we went to had a nice air conditioned waiting room for Rob to work in while we waited. The kids and I played 5 Crowns and ordered chick-fil-A from Uber Eats.
After that was all taken care of, we drove south to Norman, Oklahoma to visit an old high school buddy of Robs.
The kids made fast friends with their two dogs, and had a great time playing video games with their kids.
They spoiled us with a delicious dinner on Tuesday night and an amazing brunch this morning with pancakes, bacon, and farm fresh cheesy scrambled eggs from their very own chickens. So yummy!
We said goodbye around 1:00, finally hit up our first Walmart of the trip for some groceries and sunglasses (I forgot mine at home), and then found a place to empty our tanks and refill the water before heading west into Texas.
We got to travel on the original Route 66 for a ways, and stopped at this cute place in Elk City to take some fun pictures. There was a Route 66 museum there also but it was closed.
Then we said goodbye to Oklahoma (missed the sign on the way into the state, so I took this on the way out) and hello to the great state of Texas.
The sunset was beautiful, my picture does not do it justice (actually Jenica took this for me since I was driving.)
We arrived in Amarillo around 9:00 pm and then our generator quit working. So we bought pie at Walmart, made sandwiches for dinner, closed the curtains and will try to get some sleep tonight in this noisy parking lot with no A/C... again. Lol
Hey, sometimes all you can do is laugh and make the best of things, right?!
