NW Road Trip Day 6 - Kayaking on Lake McDonald, Glacier National Park
This morning, Jenica and Kenton finished their junior ranger books and after making a quick sightseeing drive to the Hungry Horse Dam (the friendliest dam in the country), we stopped back by the West Glacier Visitor Center so they could earn their badges.
We took the kayak out on Lake McDonald for the afternoon. We had to have it inspected for invasive species first (as do all boats before they go on Lake McDonald, and Lake McDonald is the only lake in the park that allows boats.) We inflated it and gave it a full hose down to get rid of any gravel that was left in it from the beach in Coeur d’ Alene (because seeds could be hiding in the gravel, the park ranger told us). After the boat was clean, they issued us the launch permit (no cost for that) and we were able to put the boat in right across the street.
It was so breathtaking to be out on the crystal clear lake, beautiful mountains in the background. Blue skies, perfect white fluffy clouds. As I drifted out there on the water, I was overwhelmed with gratitude at being able to have these adventures and experiences with my family.
Rob and Jenica went on a hike while the rest of us hung out at the beach. They did the Avalanche Lake hike (5 miles round trip) and took these beautiful pictures.
After dinner we played a game of Farkle and then headed to bed. Tomorrow we hit the road again.
P.S. I’ll have to add pics from my big camera when I get back home - didn’t bring a laptop or any way to get them off the SD card.
