Road Trip Day 13 - A change of direction...
This morning we packed up, emptied our tanks and the kids and I headed out in the rental car while Rob worked. We met up at the car lot at noon (Team Auto Rentals in Rapid City and Hill City if you’re ever in the area and in need of a vehicle.)
In the mean time, we made a morning out of dinosaurs.
First stop, The Dinosaur Museum.
The museum was a little spendy ($11.00 per adult and $8.00 per child) but it included a mirror maze and 9 holes of mini golf.
Next we drove up to the Dinosaur Park at the top of Rapid City. The dinosaurs were fun to climb on for about 5 minutes, but the kids were rather underwhelmed. There was a visitor center, gift shop, and snack bar also and the views of the city from up there made it worth the stop.
Plus, it was free.
We still had a little time left so we stopped at the Museum of Geology on the campus of the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology. Tenley and Kenton did a fun scavenger hunt for rocks and fossils
This was supposed to be the part of our trip where we turned around and headed back to Oregon. However, due to some changing circumstances, my spontaneous nature, and the fact that we are really loving traveling around the country in our RV, we have decided to drive to Kansas instead.
We have friends there that will let us park our RV on their property for a couple weeks, so we are going to fly back to Oregon on Monday ($250 for all 5 of us to fly one way - gas home for the RV would have been around $400).
So not only do we get to scratch a couple more states off our road trip map, we get to visit our friends and see where they’ve been calling home for the last few years, and when we are ready for our next trip, our RV will already be waiting for us in the mid-west.
On our way out of Rapid City, there were signs and billboards advertising Wall Drug for miles. I had heard of it before and their advertising worked. I had to stop. It’s too bad the girls were sleeping, they love souvenir shops and this was practically the biggest I’ve ever seen. Kenton was awake though and got to go in and check it out with daddy while I took a nap.
The kids watched movies and Rob drove late into the night to get us to a Walmart parking lot in York, Nebraska.
Tomorrow... Kansas.
