Road Trip Day 5 - Glacier National Park, Going to the Sun Road
Today we all slept in until 9am. The kids went straight to the playground and I made sausage McMuffin’s for breakfast. Then we packed up and headed out around 11:00 to explore Glacier National Park. Again, so thankful to have a rental vehicle.
Our first stop was this water source about a mile outside of the town of Hungry Horse. The guy that helped us with the truck rental highly recommended the water, even though there’s a warning to drink at your own risk.
We also bought some delicious fresh cherries from this nice gentleman:
We stopped at the West Glacier Visitor Center, talked to the Rangers and got the kids their junior ranger books. Then we explored Apgar Village and sat on the rocky shore of Lake McDonald for a while skipping rocks and people watching.
We did a quick drive-by of the Lake McDonald Lodge, which I vaguely remember from my last visit here 20 years ago.
Then we set out on the going-to-the-sun road. It’s such a gorgeous drive, all though a little unnerving at times with the huge drop off’s and probably decades old stone guard rails.
We made it all the way to Logan Pass and actually found a parking spot so we could get out and walk around. There were no mountain goats to be seen, which was kind of disappointing and Kenton really wants to see a bear. We bought bear spray before we headed out today, just in case, and the trail to Hidden Lake that we wanted to do from Logan pass was closed due to bears in the area.
Tenley finished her junior ranger booklet while we were at Logan Pass and was able to earn another badge.
On our way back down, we stopped at some spots along the river, did a short hike called The Trail of the Cedars, then treated ourselves to ice cream and watched the sun go down on Lake McDonald with this majestic view in the background.
Back at camp we grilled up some steaks and fresh green beans, the kids got to spend an hour in the pool, then they wrote postcards to the friends and we called it a night.
What adventures will be fine tomorrow?
