Road Trip Day 10 - Custer, South Dakota
I love waking up early when we’re camping and getting to walk around while it’s still quiet and no one else is awake yet. This morning I woke up a little before six and when I checked the weather for the day, I saw that sunrise was at 6:02, so I hopped up and threw on my sweatshirt and went for a little stroll around our Campground.
I relaxed in a hammock for about an hour, watching the sun come up and doing my devotions. It was splendid.
Then I headed back to our campsite to cook up a yummy pancake breakfast. After we ate, we quickly got on swimsuits and packed towells and snacks for the pool so we could be there when they opened at 9:00. Just like when we were in Zion, we had the pool and hot tub completely to ourselves for 3 hours! That too was quite splendid! We played whatever music we wanted (Disney show tunes was the playlist of choice) and the kids could splash around without worrying about bothering other guests.
We ate lunch and showered and when Rob was done working we headed out to explore Wind Cave National Park, and earn some more junior ranger badges.
The cave was closed to tours because of a broken elevator, but we were still able to go see the natural entrance and feel the cool wind blowing out. It was like nature’s air conditioning on a hot and humid day and the kids just wanted to sit there in the cold air and complete their junior ranger booklets.
We visited the town of Hot Springs and the Kidney Springs Gazebo, where the water is supposed to have healing properties.
We also saw this cool looking waterfall.
This was a neat mural in Hot Springs that I loved so much I had to get a picture of it.
Hot Springs, South Dakota is also home too The Mammoth Site, an active paleontological excavation site at which research and excavations are continuing.
Cute social distancing sign ๐
After we toured the site, the kids got to use a sluice outside to pan for fossil pieces.
Afterwords, we ate dinner next door at Wooly’s Grill and Cellar.
And we had a couple of these delicious drinks, complete with a mammoth drowning in the top. ๐
The sky on the drive home was really pretty!
Overall another fun-filled day of exploring South Dakota.
